A warm welcome to all of our families and friends. I hope you all had a great holiday period and were able to find time to spend with those you are closest to.
We haven’t had much of a summer yet but just being able to rest and break the routine of work is in itself rejuvenating and valuable. The school year has begun well. I have been visiting classes over the last few days and they are all settled and students report feeling happy and pleased to be back at school. Our deputy principal, Kristen Walsham and other senior staff spend hours and hours working on making sure that each student is in a class with a teacher that best meets their needs. It is a mammoth task to do this for 700 students but we see the benefits of this at this time of the year when the transition, especially for our Year 7 students has gone so smoothly. We also see the benefits at the end of the year when we are able to see the great progress so many of our students make over the year. We have three new staff members this year. Claire Holmes is our new performing arts teacher. Claire is a beginning teacher and is very excited about working with our students. She is going to be a wonderful addition to our staff and school. Our previous performing arts teacher Chris Hood, is still with us but has moved back into mainstream class teaching. He remains our Year 8 Dean. Elaina Anderson is our new teacher of Te Reo Maori and Kapa Haka. Elaina will work on a Friday at our school. She will also work for a day in the Primary and the Grammar school and will be the liaison person for our Whanau on Campus. We will introduce her to you at our next hui.
Finally we welcome back Atsuko Sato, who has worked at the school previously. Atsuko will teach Japanese and Mandarin to students each Friday. This will be part of our Enhancement Programme. We are excited to be able to offer these languages to our students. Our Open Day Afternoon and Evening is on February 22nd. This is an opportunity for you to come and meet your child’s teacher and begin to build that important relationship between home and school that is so pivotal in your child’s ability to succeed. I look forward to seeing you then. Mike O’Reilly Principal (Click on either flier to see an enlarged version)
