MRI Update – Friday 4 March

Whakapuāwai – To Thrive

Kia ora koutou,

As we come to the end of another busy week navigating through the extra complexities that this Omicron surge is having on the school, I’d like to thank you for your continued support as we all get through this difficult time.

Please continue to let us know as soon as you can if your child will be staying home, whether it’s because they are unwell, have COVID-19 or are required to self isolate due to being a Household Contact.

Football
Next week we are very excited to have Rosie White, one of the best women’s players NZ has, come to our school to run a training session with both our boys and girls football players.
A big thanks goes to Sport Auckland and Auckland City Football Club who are organising this for us.  Football NZ are also really excited about this and it is highly expected that TV crews from TV1, TV3 and Māori TV will be attending to capture this training session.
We look forward to sharing some photos of this taking place next week.
Please note, that we will be ensuring all people who come on site will be complying with our strict COVID safety requirements while they’re at this outside run event.

Chess

It was wonderful to have delivered to us last week the Trophy for the 2021 National Champions Chess Team – Online Intermediate Division (awarded at the end of last year).
Mt Roskill Intermediate’s Chess teams have a long track record of achieving incredibly well, as our team did last year.  We look forward to when safety settings allow for chess competitions to resume again and to see what our 2022 Chess Team can achieve!

Photolife Classroom photos
As with a lot of things that had been planned for this Term, we have had to postpone our Photolife Classroom Photos day which had been scheduled for mid March.  We will instead organise for this to take place later in the year.

Masks
A timely reminder for you to please stress the importance of how your child disposes of their disposable mask.  We are seeing discarded masks around our grounds and within the Oakely creek that borders our school, harming our environment as well as the wildlife.
Research has also been done, where it has been shown that the standard medical disposable masks can be washed up to 10 times and still keep their effectiveness.  And the N95 masks can be reworn a number of times, if you allow them to rest for at least 5 days in between.  This is great for the environment and our pockets!

Here are links to a couple of articles in relation to this:

Art
Mt Roskill Intermediate have been fortunate to receive funding for the ‘Artists in Schools’ initiative for this year.

We currently have artist Ashleigh Taupaki on site through to the end of the term, sharing her ideas and techniques.  Normally we would have her working with a number of classrooms across the school but due to Omicron, she will only be working with the students from Room 7.  Lucky them!  We look forward to seeing what art pieces Room 7 will create!

While we’re on the topic of art, here are some incredible art works by one of our talented Year 8 Students – Temaya from Room 8.   Thank you Temaya for letting us share these with our school community.

Wishing you a restful weekend and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible back next week.

Ngā mihi nui
