MRI Update, Wednesday 22 June

Kia ora koutou,
Mānawatia a Matariki — Happy Māori New Year!

We are looking forward to our Campus Matariki celebration tonight.  This year it is being held in our MRI gym and starts at 5.30pm.  An invitation is attached to this newsletter.

This is the first shared Campus event that we have been able to bring whānau back together for some time, due to the impact of COVID.  This Matariki is also a milestone for Te Ao Māori  as we nationally recognise, acknowlegde and celebrate Matariki with a public holiday for the first time.
We are looking forward to having the three schools together for an evening of celebration, performance and kai at this important time of the year.

As we come to the middle of the year, we are really starting to feel the winter chill.  It is important that we do what we can to keep winter illness at bay, so we continue to encourage mask use while indoors and for students and staff to stay home if they are feeling unwell.  We are seeing a drop in the number of COVID cases, but a rise in other colds and flu’s.

Last week’s mufti day, in support of DJ’s family raised over $1300.  This is an incredible amount and will help support DJ’s whānau with expenses during this difficult time.  We’d like to thank our community for this support.

This week we are recognising School Pride Week where we are celebrating diversity and inclusion.  Tomorrow (Thursday), we will be finishing the week with a Mufti day.  Wear bright colours and if possible, bring a gold coin donation and all money raised will go to the Rainbow Youth organisation.

A reminder that school will be closed this Friday, 24 June, for Matariki.

Ka puta Matariki, ka rere Whānui, ko te tohu tēnā o te tau hou e!
Matariki re-appears, Whānui starts its flight, Being the sign of the new year!

HIGHLIGHTS & CELEBRATIONS

Central Zone Rugby

Central Zone Rugby saw 45 students represent MRI proudly. Their behaviour at the tournament was great and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school. We had a large contingent of parent support and it was obvious how proud they were of their children. Special mention must go to the girls team who, for a team of relative novices, were absolute warriors and grew throughout the day. Special thanks to Mr Eveni and Cole Hughes. Mr Eveni has been an absolute trooper, coaching at lunchtime almost every day, and the work he did with the girls team was superb.

Carl Maskell

Central Zone Rugby was a fun and enjoyable tournament that all 3 squads trained for over the span of 5 – 6 weeks. Playing dominant schools like Waikowhai and Kowhai was a challenge, but we all played well and we all had encouragement from the sidelines. The experience was fun and the rugby squads all showed respect towards each other at the end of each game.

Congratulations goes to Anas (pictured on the right) for fulfilling both academic and competence standards and passing his Taekwondo Black Belt grading with Merit.
He received the Junior black belt (Poom) since he is under 15 years old.

Anas is a Year 8 student in Room 8. Well done!

Another fabulous achievement by one of our Year 8 Students must also be mentioned.

Yashwitha from Room 1 has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Australia Junior Teams Event for Tennis.
While in Australia, she will also be participating in the Rod Laver tournaments.

Well done Yashwitha and we wish you all the best for a successful competition.

Well done to all our students who are achieving so well in their sports.  It makes us very proud.

Wishing you a wonderful long Matariki weekend and I hope you are able to spend some time with your whānau and loved ones.

Ngā mihi nui,
