MRI Update, Monday 29 August

Whakapuāwai – To Thrive

MRI Closing Early This Friday
We would like to advise that we will be closing half an hour early at 2.30pm, this Friday 2 September.  This is due to our farewell function for Mr Berry on his final day.  Thank you for your support of this.

Kia ora koutou,

Today marks the halfway point of Term 3, with the start of week 6 of this 10-week term.  This term is a very busy one, full of celebrations and many exciting things that our students are involved in around the school.

Last week, Mrs Tracey Hughes and I attended the NZAIMS (New Zealand Association of Intermediate and Middle schools) Centenary Conference which focused on the vision, needs and direction of Intermediate Schools in New Zealand Education.

It was great to see large numbers of our parents and caregivers coming in to meet with their child’s teacher at our recent Talanoa Ako Learning Conversation meetings.  We are pleased that we could hold these in person once again, but also with the flexibility of online meetings if they were requested.  Keeping the connection between school and home is important.  We believe that when home, child and school work together, powerful learning occurs. Teachers will be following up with families where meetings were unable to go ahead.

In less than a month, our production, Hook, will be performed over two nights.  With the cancellation of our production the past two years due to COVID, we are really looking forward to this moment.   Many, many hours of hard mahi has been going into preparing for this show and it is going to be fantastic!
From today, tickets for the two shows are on sale.  Tickets can be purchased from the foyer in front of the office, either before school or during morning tea break. Payment by either cash or eftpos.  See our poster below for more details.

Below you will see a notice about the Mt Roskill Campus Fiafia night.  This is a wonderful community event, where we celebrate Pasifika learners and leaders on the Mt Roskill Campus.  This will be held at Mt Roskill Grammar school, in the Butler hall.

At the end of this week we will be farewelling Mr Ross Berry.  As we advised the community a number of weeks ago, Mr Berry is retiring from the education sector.  Mr Berry has been with MRI for the past 22 years, with 14 of those as Deputy Principal.
Our students have been working hard preparing for a wonderful farewell and send off for Mr Berry.

On Wednesday this week we have a number of students who will be competing at the Central Zone Cross Country competition.  We wish you all well!

Have a wonderful week everyone.

Ngā mihi nui,

Kristen Walsham

Mathex Competition

Last Thursday evening saw Mathex happen again for the first time in 3 years. Mathex is an amazing maths problem solving competition held at the Barefoot and Thompson Stadium in Kohimarama. The stadium was packed and there were approximately 120 Auckland schools competing. Some of our top mathematicians competed and they all did very well. The year 8 boys team came in the top 10 of those 120 schools. They finished all 20 questions in 20 minutes. The year 8 girls also did extremely well finishing in the top 25.
Congratulations to all the participants, you made us all at MRIS very proud.

Congratulations to our Year 8 student Anas Zara who was awarded 1st place, with a special prize, at the recent NIWA Science and Technology Fair in the Year 7 & 8 Human Behaviour category!
His Scientific Investigation was titled ‘You Witness, Eyewitness’ which focused on the scientific validity of eye witness accounts of different aged students. Well done Anas, this is a wonderful scientific investigation and result!

Congratulations to our Year 8 student Tracey Sit, who built a lego launcher for her fair testing experiment involving flight.
The technology that she built and used won her a special University of Auckland Prize in the Physical World category at the NIWA Science and Technology Fair.

Congratulations Tracey, we look forward to seeing what you do in the future!

A big congratulations go to our Boys Central Zone Squash Team who came away with a fantastic 2nd place overall!

They won four out of five rounds.

The team was made up of (left to right) Anas, Afnaan and Dylan.

Well Done!

Ski Trip 2022 – Queenstown

Last week, 17 students and 4 staff enjoyed a week of great weather and all the excitement that Winter in Queenstown holds. After starting off with luging up at Bob’s Peak, the group learnt to ski at The Remarkables ski field where they went for 3 days in weather ranging from clear blue skies to a morning of snow. The 4th day was over at Cardrona where their new skills were put to the test.
The final day included a visit to Arrowtown where they tried their hand at gold panning, before returning home to Auckland late Friday afternoon.  Everyone had a fantastic time!
