Whakapuāwai – To Thrive

下午好 Xià wǔ hǎo (good afternoon) and welcome to Week 10 of Term 3.

This week is New Zealand Chinese Language week.  We will be taking this opportunity to learn some useful chinese phrases as well as other learning activities which include a Lantern Competition.

This week is also Mental Health Awareness week.  This year’s theme is Reconnect: with the people and places that lift you up.  This week provides a good opportunity to keep the discussion going around mental health, what it means to our students and how we, as a school, can help support our students.

I hope you all enjoyed the unexpected long weekend in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II.

It wasn’t a holiday for everyone though.  Yesterday 34 of our students and a handful of staff headed off early to Totara Springs, in Matamata for Sports Camp week.   These students were selected by the school to attend this camp where during the week they will compete against nine other school teams in over 30 different sports.  Sports range from Basketball, Croquet, Netball, Petanque, Rugby, Soccer,  Softball, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball to Athletics, Cross Country, Frisbee Golf, Kayaking, Swimming and the list goes on!
MRI started off strongly yesterday with the students dominating in athletics.
We wish them all well for this action packed week ahead!

Over the past couple of weeks a number of significant things have been going on.
 – We gave our long-serving Board members, Roger Deverell and Jim Bruce a well-deserved send-off as they have retired from our Board after 15 and over 20 years respectively, serving our school Board and community.

 – Our amazing production Hook was performed over two sell-out nights.

 – And we have had numerous teams competing and doing very well in Central Zone competitions including Basketball and Futsal.

Coming up in the first week of Term 4, Mt Roskill Intermediate will be hosting the Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) Art exhibition which will be displaying art works from students across all the local schools within our Kāhui Ako. This includes a number of art works created by MRI students during our earlier Art Week that are being re-exhibited. See the flyer below for more information.  It will be a wonderful display of art for you to come along to see and experience.

Tomorrow we will be emailing out a Health Consultation.  Please keep an eye out for this email and we would appreciate it if you could spend a few minutes of your time completing this short questionnaire.  Your responses will help us better improve our health programme within the school.

This is the last week of Term 3 and being a short week, it really will fly by.
We will communicate with you all again on Friday before the two week holiday.

HOOK

After being unable to hold a production for the past two years due to COVID-19, it was wonderful to see this year’s production Hook performed last week.  And what an incredible show it was!

Both nights were sold out and all our actors did an outstanding job on both of the nights.

It takes many hours of hard mahi and commitment and many hands to bring a show like this to the stage.  From the actors perfecting their role, their understudies ready to fill in if needed, rehearsals, rehearsals and more rehearsals, stage sets to be created, costumes made, make-up applied, hair done, and plenty more.

For all the students involved, this will hold lasting lifelong memories for them. Special mention to Ava Donnell (Peter Pan) who was injured on set during technical week and worked incredibly hard to be able to come back to perform on the last night and Anas Zara who did an amazing job stepping into and owning the Peter Pan role for the matinee and first evening performance. We are so proud of both of these actors for their resilience and hard work.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support the show.

Roger Deverell and Jim Bruce Farewell.

Over 100 family and friends joined in the celebration of thanking both Roger Deverell and Jim Bruce for their many years of service to Mt Roskill Intermediate School.

A reminder that Expressions of Interest to join our school Board close 24th October.
The Board is looking for expressions of interest for those who would be interested in joining the board to fill our final place. If you are interested in giving back to the community, have a few hours each month available to attend meetings and school events and have a particular flair for finance and/or property management, we would love to hear from you. It is such a rewarding role and is incredibly supportive of the school.

To register your interest, please contact Kylie on kdarbysmith@mri.school.nz and if you have any questions, we’d be happy to answer them.
